Leading Nordic designers and architects came together for the presentation of the prestigious Forum AID awards in Stockholm on the third of February 2009. Among the winners was
Katrín Ólína Pétursdóttir, who received an award for her design of Cristal Bar in Hong Kong. Renowned Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG, received the award for architecture, Oskar Zieta for design, and Daniel Rybakken of Norway was rewarded for Best Student Work.
The jury deemed Katrín Ólína’s work especially effective, "with every available surface covered with Olina’s graphic art, the
patterns become more than just decoration and create a dream-like,
immersive environment. It is a simple idea to make a two-dimensional
pattern the dominant design feature of a three-dimensional space, but
the result is striking".
Katrín Ólína is one of Iceland’s most prolific designers, who has
recently been a participant in many projects and shows around the
world, and has attracted attention in the design world for her work,
while also working for many of the world’s leading design companies.
It was good news that so many Icelandic designers were nominated for
Forum AID awards this year, in all four categories. Nominated in the
Architecture category were Kurtogpí Architects, PK Architects and KRADS
Architects. Katrín Ólína, in addition to being nominated in the
Interior Design category, was also nominated in the Design category for
her bench and stool Mestibekkur. Sruli Recht too was nominated for
Design, and Friðgerður Guðmundsdóttir in the Best Student Work category
for her work Stuðlar.
The Forum AID awards are awarded in 2009 for the eighth consecutive
year. The prestigious international jury comprised Marcus Fairs,
founder of Icon and Dezeen, renowned French architect Manuelle
Gautrand, Sean Griffiths, a founder of FAT Architecture, and Dirk
Wynants of Belgian Extremis.
