Textile Guild 35th anniversary exhibition

Cross-section is the title of the Textile Guild exhibition which opens at Gerðarsafn in Kópavogur on Saturday 7 February at 16.00. The exhibition, which comprises three parts, is highly diverse, spanning more than 60 years of textile history. The show includes recent works by members of the Guild and by honorary members, along with works by four women who during the 20th century played a vital role in bringing textile art into the modern world.

The Textile Guild marks its 35th anniversary at a time when Icelandic society is in a process of reassessment. Knitting is enjoying unparalleled popularity in this time of economic difficulty: Icelandic wool is to be seen everywhere, as people enjoy the process of creation, of using a valuable resource. After decades of minimalism, we have a need for diversity of colour and texture.

Textile, which in olden times was a necessity of life, is the form of expression chosen by the artists who show their work at Gerðarsafn. The art of needlework is still alive; we express ourselves in many different ways, motivated by the urge to create.
A varied programme is planned for the Textile Guild’s anniversary year: the Cross-section exhibition opens at Gerðarsafn in February; in March a textile workshop and studio opens at Korpúlfsstaðir, followed by an exhibition at the end of the year.
