Following on from an inspirational journey
appreciated by students from the Iceland
Academy of the Arts and pioneers in Icelandic Design, Reykjavik
Rewind invites the designers back for Design March 2010.
A refreshing dialogue
between design students and some of Iceland’s most prominent and respected
designers, who have been contributing to Icelandic design since the 1950s.
This time round the
pioneers are called upon to curate an exhibition, with the objective of
commemorating Iceland’s design achievements during the 1950´s -1960´s.
Sharing their
experience, knowledge, processes and know how as something valuable for us to
draw upon for today’s work, the exhibition will highlight furniture and
products personally selected by the designers.
The challenge for the
designers and sons and daughters of designers past, is to select from their
extensive back catalogues, 1 piece for reasons to be shared that have become
most memorable to the individuals. Quite a challenge for some considering the
wealth and depths of designs amassed over their extensive careers, but a
challenge that has been taken up with great vigor and passion by all parties
involved.
The furniture on show expresses a specific set of
values; the pieces tell something about their author(s) and their users. More materialistically they are good
investments, used for a very long time, often passed on from generation to
generation. More importantly these pieces are evidence of Iceland’s design and
manufacturing heritage. Something clearly worthwhile celebrating and sharing.
The project is a
collaboration of the
Iceland Academy of the Arts, Reykjavík University,
The Icelandic Society of Furniture and Interior Architects and
the Museum of Design and Applied Art with
special thanks to Elísabet V. Ingvarsdóttir design historian.
